Got a court date reminder text? Here's how to tell it's real.
Scammers send fake "court date" and "missed court" texts. Real CourtRemind™ reminders come from your attorney's office or your bail agent and only remind you of a court date. They never ask for anything.
A real CourtRemind reminder
- Starts with your attorney's or bail agent's name, usually followed by "via CourtRemind."
- Gives the date, time, courthouse, and department of a court date, and sometimes the judge.
- Asks you to reply C to confirm, or STOP to opt out.
- Never contains a link. Not to pay, not to "check your case," not to anything.
- Never asks for money, payment, gift cards, or bank details.
- Never asks for your Social Security number, date of birth, or passwords.
- Never threatens arrest unless you pay or call a number.
Signs of a scam
- A link to "view your case," "pay your fine," or "avoid a warrant."
- A demand for payment, especially by gift card, wire transfer, or payment app.
- Threats that you'll be arrested today unless you pay or call right away.
- A court date you know nothing about, from a "court" or "sheriff" rather than your attorney.
- Requests for personal information like your Social Security number.
Not sure? Call your attorney.
Use a phone number you already have for your attorney, bail agent, or the court, not a number from the text. They can confirm your court date in a minute.
Questions
Why did I get a court date reminder from CourtRemind?
Your attorney, their law firm, or your bail agent uses CourtRemind to send court date reminders. They added your phone number because you, or the person you are helping, has a court date coming up.
How do I stop the reminders?
Reply STOP. You won't get any more reminders from that firm. If you still want reminders, ask your attorney to turn them back on.
The date or courthouse looks wrong. What should I do?
Call your attorney's office to check. Do not skip court because a reminder looks different from what you expected. Your attorney or the court has the final word on your court date.
Does CourtRemind know about my case?
CourtRemind only has what the firm entered to send reminders: your name, phone number, and the date, time, and place of the court date. For anything about your case, call your attorney.
I got a text about a missed court date asking me to pay. Is it from you?
No. CourtRemind reminders never ask for payment and never threaten arrest. A message like that is a scam. Don't reply, don't click any link, and call the court or your attorney using a number you already know.
